 ject promoted by the “La fornace” APS association\, with the contribution 
 of the Municipality of Borghetto Santo Spirito\, aimed at rediscovering lo
 cal olive varieties. Following a scientific study and thanks to the use of
  molecular genotyping techniques\, in collaboration with one of Italy’s le
 ading specialized research laboratories\, it was indeed possible to identi
 fy with certainty the varieties of a substantial number of historic plants
  and to reconstruct the genetic relationships between the different cultiv
 ars – olive varieties. The hilly areas of Val Varatella are characterized 
 by the scenic presence of olive monoculture on terraced slopes. The evolut
 ion of the local economy during the twentieth century caused the abandonme
 nt of the more isolated slopes\, where the structures built between the la
 te Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era remain evident. In the 
 municipal territory of Borghetto Santo Spirito\, many hectares of “fossil”
  historic olive groves also remain\, which the project has studied. The re
 sults will be compared with accessions included in an international databa
 se\, unique of its kind\, consisting of over ten thousand olive genotypes 
 from all olive-growing countries: this is made possible by the participati
 on of the “La fornace” APS association as a stakeholder in the “Omibreed” 
 project conducted by the National Research Council – Institute of Bioscien
 ces and Bioresources (CNR-IBBR). The project proposes three dissemination 
 initiatives. On Saturday\, October 17\, at 3:30 PM\, a brief informal meet
 ing will take place at the multipurpose hall of Palazzo Pietracaprina\, to
  present the research program and many curiosities\, news and previews of 
 the work already carried out. The meeting is open to all and will be an op
 portunity to better know our territory and its history. The following Satu
 rday\, October 24\, again at Palazzo Pietracaprina\, an afternoon dedicate
 d to the youngest will follow\, with tastings\, games\, observations\, exp
 eriments and “fun” for children (and not only…). Using the five senses and
  a bit of observation spirit\, participants will discover some curiosities
  and characteristics of extra virgin oils and local olive varieties. Third
  and final appointment on October 31 at 2:30 PM\, with an easy and panoram
 ic hillside walk to explore the geography of the valley’s ancient olive gr
 oves. In a territory in constant evolution\, the archaeological traces of 
 past agro-silvo-pastoral activities remain: dry stone walls\, mule tracks\
 , “caselle”\, stables and centuries-old olive tree stumps\, a heritage to 
 decipher that has much to tell\, starting with the history of property reg
 imes. The meeting point for the excursion will be at the chapel of Madonna
  della Neve\, at Pattarello\, along the provincial road to Toirano. The ex
 cursion will last about a couple of hours and trekking clothing is recomme
